Hurricane Irene struck the southern states of North Carolina Saturday morning, floodingstreets and knocking down trees with winds of 140 kilometers per hour. The storm thenmoved to the Washington, DC, which continued blowing with strong winds, heavy rain,local flooding and the collapse of the trees.New York state began to feel the effects of the storm shortly before midnight Saturday,with wind speeds increase Sunday morning. Irene forecasters said the storm wouldmove into southern New England in the northeastern United States before reachingCanada on Sunday afternoon Sunday evening.
On Saturday, President Barack Obama visited the command center where emergencyofficials are coordinating efforts by the state handling. He warned the situation willbecome critical within the next few days.
Forecasters said the storm winds were felt up to 150 kilometers away from the eye of the storm.
Ordered the U.S. Navy Second Fleet, stationed in the state of Virginia, to sail out to sea to avoid possible damage.
